Meeting with the Mayor
In December Safety For Students was welcomed with enthusiasm as our Executive Director met with Mayor Joe Fontana down at London's City Hall. The mayor said he was in full support of the program and would be interested in meeting again once the organization has developed a more formal strategic plan, and qualified for "not for profit" status. We are excited to take these steps in 2012 so the message can be carried to more communities.
Safety For Students Van
We are now on the road thanks to the support of business owner Chris Vlemmix over at SpeedPro Imaging. The London business recognizes the importance of carrying safety messages to the students and their communities. They have chose a great way to combine their expertise in vehicle advertising with our need for creating awareness. We are grateful for their sponsorship and would encourage you to support their business. Our goal is to advertise the website to our communities, brand our logo, and thank some of our gold sponsors for their continued support with the program.
The Safety Factor
We launched the very first video event for Safety For Students which really provided a forum of expression for Students For Safety! The students at St.George's Public School and videographer Bryan Bakker of BizBioTV invested a day together creating some exciting, creative and meaniful footage that will carry the message in another medium. The video will be ready for viewing on safetyforstudents.ca, bizbiotv.ca, and the St.George's school website. We also hope to post the video on You Tube. This is all in the works for early 2012! Once Mr. Bakker has completed the editing a date will be scheduled so all the students can enjoy the video together in an assembly. We hope to do this in early 2012 and some draws will take place so all the students that participated have a chance at a prize! Our big theme for the event was on Anti-Bullying. Safety For Students took the Pledge along with principal David Ennis and all of the students at St.George's Public school earlier that week. Copies of the video may be available for those interested in supporting the school and organization with a donation. A special thanks to Bryan Bakker for all of his time and hard work with the students and the Safety Factor!
Street Proofing Seminar
Bernardo Karate was open to the idea of welcoming Safety For Students into their Karate School for another traditional poster activity. We would like to thank Michael Bernardo and his staff for sharing their space and students so we could carry the message at the centre. We started November 15 with an interactive seminar that involved the students ideas about safety. We talked about issues like stranger danger, fire safety, and internet best practices. The group was empowered and ready to take on the task of creating some safety posters. Returning a week later we were blessed with some awesome designs and reminded of the importance of these life saving messages. All of the posters were on display and some of the staff at the school chose some of the designs that were plaqued for the new safety wall inside the facility. The ArtBank has been supportive by sponsoring all of the plaquing for the designs chosen at all of the events! Our special thanks to Margaret and Deb at the ArtBank for continuing to ensure that these awesome designs and important messages have a public home after the events! By leaving some of the designs up in schools and other facilities we are reminded of the simple steps we can take to be safe, and of the incredible talent our youth possess.
